While previous medico-legal experience is not essential, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Essential Criteria for Expert Witness Role

1. Clinical and Professional Practice
- Current Practice: You must be actively engaged in a clinical role that involves direct patient care, whether within the public or private sector.
- UK-Based Experience: A minimum of five years’ clinical practice within the UK is required.
- Professional Experience: Care Experts must possess at least ten years of post-qualification experience at a senior level, underpinned by degree-level or higher qualifications.
- Professional Registration: You must hold current registration with your relevant professional body (e.g., HCPC or NMC), with no ongoing or pending internal or regulatory investigations.

2. Skills and Competencies
- Care Planning Expertise: Demonstrable experience in assessing care needs and recommending appropriate care packages is essential.
- Quantitative and Analytical Skills: You must be able to prepare and justify costed recommendations with clarity and precision.
- Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication, along with sound numeracy, are required – especially the ability to convey complex clinical reasoning in a clear and concise manner.
- Professionalism: A consistent commitment to timeliness, responsiveness, and meeting deadlines is expected.

3. Commitment and Availability
- Time Commitment: A minimum availability of 10 hours per week for medico-legal work is required. This should include time during the working week (Monday to Friday) for supervision, report writing, and case conferences.
- Ongoing Development: A proactive approach to maintaining both clinical and medico-legal continuing professional development (CPD) is essential.

4. Mobility
Travel Requirements: The ability to travel for assessments is desirable. A full UK driving licence or equivalent travel capability is required.
